EF Founder Bertil Hult Runs With the Olympic Torch
Hong Kong, May 8th, 2008
EF's Founder and Swedish entrepreneur, Bertil Hult, ran with the Olympic Torch in China on May 7. Bertil Hult was one of 208 torch bearers who made a 200-meter run with the Olympic flame on the torch's first stop in the mainland of China.
Crowds waited for hours in heat and humidity to catch a glimpse of the Olympic torch in downtown Guangzhou, one of China's largest Southern cities and home to over six EF schools.
As one of the first foreigners to carry the flame in China, Hult said: "As the Chinese saying goes, 'A journey of one thousand miles starts with a single step'. The steps we took today, bearing the Olympic torch, is a symbol of the small steps we are making here to the larger goal of helping China talk to the world - in English. EF and the Olympics share the same ideals - a commitment to international friendship and cultural exchange."
As the Official Language Training Services Supplier of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, EF has been helping to teach English to the professionals associated with organizing the Beijing Olympic Games. EF has trained nearly 4,000 Judges, translators, interpreters, Beijing Organizing Committee Staff and competition organizers. With over 400 schools and offices around the world, EF is one of the world's leading education organizations. Founded in 1965, EF has helped more than 15 million people learn a new language and travel abroad.
